It’s truly been a time since I last wrote. A lot of stuff has happened in my personal life; some for the better, and some that I truly could’ve done without. But that’s life! And it’s great writing material, what can I say?
Yesterday was my last day working my part-time job library, and it was a bittersweet farewell for the moment. I’ll miss the people and I’ll miss the books. I’ll be starting a full-time remote position next week, and I’m excited for the freedom that’ll grant me! Who knows, maybe I’ll be swinging around your way early next year?
Last month, I finished up the latest draft of my Count Yourself Among the Lucky as part of the Spring 2021 Workshop Intensive (look at my hottie headshot here). It was fun! I feel that I’m starting to learn more and more about these three characters as time goes on, and I feel confident enough to put this piece down for a few months before revisiting it.
With Volt Lab at Company One, I just finished up the rough, in-progress first draft of what is currently called [sighs] Congratulations! to the Graduating Class of 2015 and Our Deepest Apologies for Everything that Happened During Your Time Here and Afterwards. During the feedback session, I dubbed it a “developing metatheatrical experience.” But honestly, it’s just me interrogating my guilt about an incident that happened in high school and my self-criticism of why I feel entitled to turn that into a play and then more guilt.
It’ll be fun to write, I do think that. It’ll be a good exercise in the ethics of writing, I think. (If this reminds you of the Cat Person discourse, it was pretty damn good timing. Here’s an article my friend sent me that is mostly aligned with my point of view.) I’ll absolutely be changing the title at some point in time, simply because there is so much irreverence in the draft and I feel like it needs at least some genuine poignance.
There’s more stuff going on, but I’m pretty sure I’ll get in trouble if I post about it. But stuff’s cooking. There’s something on the stove, something on the back burner, and some snacks lying around. Stuff is being written; submissions are being cast into the sea. I’ve been writing fanfiction to break through writer’s block and I’m hoping to use the time between jobs to just indulge in that.
Here’s some stuff I’ve been Consuming lately:
Sorrowland by Rivers Solomon. Book of the century, honestly.
Loki (2021). 🙄 Genderfluid people lost!
Cherish (2002). Robin Tunney’s Bizarre Adventure. I actually haven’t rewatched this lately but this is truly turning out to be the movie that has decided to actively rot my brain from the inside out. Couldn’t imagine a world where I didn’t watch this though.
As always, take care, until next time,
Alicia
